The Importance of Golf Wedges
The Importance of Golf Wedges
03-06-2009

Golf wedges are of immense importance in the game of golf. Golfers play most of the shots from 120 yards during a round of golf. Using different golf wedges, you can achieve dramatic results in varying degrees. Versatility of a golf wedge depends on the build of the wedge. Golf wedges range in weight, length and loft. Knowledge of how each golf wedge functions is a great help to choose the right golf wedge that will enhance your capability and boost your performance. In this article I will provide you with some basic information on different golf wedges.

Pitching wedge

Pitching wedge is the least lofted club of all scoring clubs. It is an extension of golf irons. They come with the purchase of a set of golf clubs. Pitching wedge is largely found in the golf bags of beginners. Using this club is fun because it can strike the ball so hard that the ball will fly a good distance at high. A golf-pitching wedge is exclusively used to make longer approach shots into the green, longer sand or bunker shots and low chip shots. You can get an edge over your fellow golfers by hitting your pitching wedge solidly.

Gap wedge

A gap wedge is the gap of 20 yards between a pitching wedge that the average golfer hits 110-`125 yards and a sand wedge that they hit about 80-90 yards. It is hard to hit a soft pitching wedge and a hard sand wedge. Hitting a golf gap wedge can help you make a nice full swing. It is available in a variety of lofts ranging from 46 to 54 degrees. This club can be used from the deep rough and soft fairways. Gap wedges are often called dual wedges and approach wedges. These clubs come with the trajectory that differs a little in case of different clubs. Sets of irons do not come with them. To attack the course, you can use one of the gap wedges at 50 degree with 4 degrees in between every two gap wedges.

Lob wedge

Lob wedge is one of the coolest golf clubs in the bag of an amateur golfer or a pro golfer. Also called finesse clubs, lob wedges are largely used by golfers to make touch shots in the green. These shots are lifted quickly into the air. The highest and shortest lofted of all the irons, lob wedge varies in a range of lofts between 60 and 65 degrees. You can use these wedges from the rough or the fairway. It can help you fly a shot over a bunker and stop it immediately on the green. One of the reasons for golfers’ preference for lob wedge is that using it they can make a large full swing in a short distance.

Sand wedge

Sand wedges are the wonderful golf clubs that are useful from the sand, the grass and the fairway as well. It stands out from the golf clubs of other categories because of its flexibility and functionality. It weighs the heaviest in a set of golf clubs due to the excess metal in its bounce. It is necessary for making recovery shots and the sand wedge comes in a range of lofts between 54 and 58 degrees. Gene Sarazen had developed it in 1930 as a higher lofted club to escape hazards on the golf course. Using this club, you can aim the ball at its target with a high trajectory. The ball struck by sand wedge can stop quickly on the greens. Extra metal in the bounce of sand wedges prevents you from digging and help you take an instant flight from the sand trap.

Westwood returns to winning ways
Westwood returns to winning ways
10-18-2009

After three play-off defeats, two near misses in Majors and an amazing 26 top-ten finishes since his last victory, Lee Westwood was finally back lifting a trophy at the Portugal Masters.

Westwood ended more than two years without a title by capturing victory at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course by two shots from Italian Francesco Molinari and four from Padraig Harrington.

The added bonus - he would have been happy to win the smallest event - was that the massive first prize of €500,000 takes Westwood from fourth to first on The Race to Dubai.

And that is not all. When The Ryder Cup star last tasted success at the British Masters in September 2007 he said his goal was to make the world's top five again.

Now he has done it and the way he is playing it is not difficult to see him climbing even higher.

Not bad for a former European Number One and World Number Four who, in a nightmare slump seven years ago, fell outside the game's top 250.
