VIDEO INFORMATION

Objectives

This video explains the causes for the most common mistakes associated with body pivot. Reverse pivot, which is keeping the body and weight on the left side of your body; and sway, which is an exaggerated weight transfer on your backswing.

Description

This video will show two common mistakes in high handicap golfers: reverse pivot and sway.

SHOT DESCRIPTION (Quick Links)

SHOT DESCRIPTION

Key Elements

Weight Shift

Objective

Reason

Consideration

In order to achieve power in the swing it is important to shift the weight properly.

In the beginning of the back swing the weight should shift to the inside of the right leg. At the very end of the backswing and early part of the down swing the weight should shift to the left foot allowing for the golfer to finish up on their right toe in the finish position with the weight having completing shifted to the left side.

Ideal weight distribution is not the same for every club.

Shoulder Turn

Objective

Reason

Consideration

One of the important elements of the swing especially for power is the turning of the shoulders. However you need to turn you shoulders in the proper moment during the back swing.

The golfer should start the swing with the feeling of the club head and arms starting the swing since they have much further to travel that the shoulders to the top of the back swing. Allow for the swinging of the club and arms to begin turning your shoulders. Do not try and independently turn your shoulders from the beginning of your swing. Once the club has swung about half way back in the back swing you can feel your left shoulder coil over your right foot.

Now the turning of your shoulders and the swinging of the club should be in sync and you shoulders will complete the back swing together with the swinging of the club for a very powerful position.

Hip Turn

Objective

Reason

Consideration

Be able to turn the hips 45 degrees.

The hips should turn slightly during the back swing and unwind fully during the down swing and follow through. When the hips turn during the back swing the hips will be fairly level, with the left hip fractionally higher than the right hip. As the club swings through impact the left leg will straighten causing the left hip to be higher than the right hip.

Lower Body Resistance

Objective

Reason

Consideration

To achieve the correct resistance in the lower body, and to accomplish the correct body turn.

The lower body should provide resistance as the club swings back in the back swing. The swinging of the club and the turning of the shoulders will cause the lower body to turn slightly however the lower body will remain fairly stable creating tremendous power and torque due to the differential between the turning of the upper body against the resistance of the lower body.

Not necessarily body resistance applies to all shots.

How To

1

» Reverse pivot: the most common cause of the reverse pivot is the set up. If you set up with your right side (hip, shoulder, arm) higher than your left side, it will impede your body to rotate and the weight to be transferred to the right. So, make sure you have a correct set-up with your body slightly tilted to the right side, your left shoulder higher than your right one, and your left hip higher than your right. With this good set-up, so long you keep your hips tilted, you will be lee likely to reverse pivot.

» Sway: during your backswing, you want to have some movement to the right, but do not over do it. When you loose your stability of your right leg. your body will tend to move too much to the right. You want to feel that you keep the weight on the inside the right foot at all times through out the backswing.

Solid

» Be able to create a dynamic movement in your swing.
» Avoiding these two mistakes will create a torque on your backswing that will be the key to release the power on the downswing through the impact.
» Your shoulder turn, together with the hip turn and weight shift constitute the most critical aspects of your backswing in order for you to be a consistent golfer.

Not enough shoulder turn.

Shoulders too leveled. There is a wrong concept of leveled shoulders at set up. Your left shoulder should be slightly higher than your right.

Thus, when gripping your right hand is slightly under your left hand.

Straightening of the right leg.

No stability in the lower body.

Keep your right knee slightly flexed throughout your entire backswing, which will create resistance and augment your power.

Poor weight shift.

Shift the weight to the right leg and then fully turn your shoulders.
